General description of the post
To assist in providing a person-centred counselling service to children and families who use the hospice services, including pre and post bereaved families.
The post holder must maintain BACP membership/accreditation and abide by the BACP ethical framework. They must receive regular external supervision.
Key Responsibilities
- To provide counselling and support to children and family members who are accessing the services of the Donna Louise Children’s Hospice Trust.
- To make assessments of appropriate counselling provision, reviews and referral to other services if required.
- To work with the Family Counsellor in providing individual support and group work to children and patients.
- To assist with designing and delivering training activities within the organisation.
- To maintain accurate records of activity and ensure that all information is maintained in accordance with the organisations policies and procedures.
- To work as a member of a multi disciplinary team and contribute as required to the overall objectives of the organisation.

Post-qualification counselling experience
Experience of working within a multi-professional team
Working with the bereaved
KNOWLEDGE
Bereavement processes and the needs of the bereaved
The particular needs of bereaved children and young people
QUALIFICATIONS/TRAINING
Diploma in counselling or equivalent
BACP accreditation or equivalent, or working towards
SKILLS/ABILITIES
Ability to address individual needs, using a person-centred or similar model
Ability to use counselling skills on the telephone as a first contact with those who may need extra support
Ability to work with and support volunteers
Experience of delivering training
Good verbal and written skills
Able to use initiative and work autonomously when required
Basic IT skills
