Our Education and Development Lead, Gill Clifford opens up about what it’s like to work here at The Donna Louise
Gill joined The Donna Louise as a children's nurse 11 years ago. Having always worked in children's palliative care, she was no stranger to working with children, but her previous roles had been in the community, a hospital, in schools and working with health visitors. Gill had always enjoyed working with children with long-term conditions and being able to build relationships with them and their families. When the opportunity to work at The Donna Louise came up, Gill jumped at the chance to apply and joined the Hospice as a children's nurse.
"When I joined, the Hospice had been open for just under a year. I'd been working with a community nursing team and saw that The Donna Louise was holding an open day. I knew straight away that working in a children's hospice was right up my street so I went along to find out more.
Our nurses have quality 1-1 time with the children and their families and are able to build a really strong bond with them. As a nurse you're able to focus purely on giving the child the best experience while they are here. Seeing the evidence of the care we give is so rewarding – we have to do so little to get the most amazing smile, and it's fantastic!"
During the 11 years she has worked at The Donna Louise, Gill's role has developed and she is now part of the Senior Care Team as the Education and Development Lead for the Hospice. Her role now involves service development, audit, risk management and educational training.
"My role now focuses on how the things we do within the Hospice have an impact. We can't develop one service without another so I look at the bigger picture to develop our practices and procedures. I love training our new staff and watching them progressing, growing and flourishing within their role.
"Working at The Donna Louise really is my dream job. It's an amazing place and so rewarding. The investment in staff is fantastic and there are so many opportunities to learn and grow. Most importantly, everyone is totally committed to delivering the best quality of care for the families who use the Hospice."
