Meet Angela our resident Social Worker

24 January 2017 Written by Joshua Slater

Angela WardAngela is The Donna Louise's resident Social Worker and helps our families to access the emotional and practical support they need. This usually involves liaising with various agencies within the statutory and voluntary sector.

Angela explained, "I love my job because no two days are the same. Whether it's visiting a family at home, attending a child protection meeting with the local authorities, catching up on paperwork in my office at the Hospice or meeting with a local MP to tell them about the work we do, there is so much variety in my role.

"I work full time, but I manage my own diary so my hours are pretty flexible to fit around the needs of the families I'm working with. I love being part of such a good, supportive care team, while having the autonomy to manage my own work load. I'm able to spend as much time as I need to with the families and have the flexibility to meet their needs, without the bureaucracy pressures I've experienced in some of my previous roles."

Angela has been a social worker for more than 30 years and joined The Donna Louise in July 2015 having previously worked in local authorities, hospitals and a secure unit.

She added, "I can honestly say that the Donna Louise is the best job I've ever had. The support from the team, the variety, the atmosphere and of course, working with the inspirational children and families who come to the Hospice, makes every day really interesting and very rewarding."

Despite her experience in the social work sector, Angela was apprehensive when she applied for the role at The Donna Louise. "As with most people, when I saw the word "hospice" I wasn't sure what to expect. I thought it would be a quiet, solemn place but I couldn't have been more wrong.

"We celebrate lives here - it's a place of fun, laughter and joy and whenever there are sad times, we all pull together and support each other. So for anyone considering a role at the Hospice, I would encourage them to come and have a chat and see for themselves what a great place to work it is."
